The news about the production version of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne is getting more and more apparent. It has been months since we started getting spy photos and various photographs about this car without any solid proof. The production of this vehicle started as early as 2015 but it is only now getting close to being finished and we can finally hope for a release date to come soon.
The base Bentley Mulsanne was launched in 2010 and came as a replacement car for the Bentley Arnage. The car that we see before us know is going to be a mid-cycle update given to the Mulsanne which will make it even more competitive on the market.
Bentley is not known for giving extensive updates to its cars, they would often leave the car nearly intact for almost a decade. It is almost the same with the 2018 Mulsanne, but we have to say that they actually did more here than we have expected them to do. The facelift brings more modifications to the exterior of the car and we can perhaps thanks the upcoming roster of cars which are coming out with the Bentley label.
But the 2018 Bentely Mulsanne did not come alone here, we also received an Extended Wheelbase version and a Speed variant, with the convertible one being in plans also but not yet shown.
When is the Release Date of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne?
As we already know, the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne was showcased for the first time at the Geneva Auto Show. We had our first look at the car and received the first confirmation of the car actually existing, but there were no evidence about the release date. Now we know that we can expect the car to hit somewhere around 2017, with the latter part of the year being a more suitable timetable for arrival.
What is the Price of the Redesigned 2018 Bentley Mulsanne?
The price of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne has still not been officially given by the time we devised this review, but we can estimate the newest figures easily. The current Mulsanne is priced at $290,000, which pits the 2018 version of the Bentley Mulsanne priced above $300,000. Adding more options to it will enhance the price even more.
Mild Updates for the Exterior as Usual from Bentley
We did not really expect for the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne to change so much and the designers did not disappoint. We have received a very mild refresh for the car which has been a staple of Bentley for years now. It has been almost 5 years so far but the car has not changed so much given the time it was given. But the biggest change to the front has to be the new grille which is wider and has stainless steel vertical slats over the matrix mesh. On the sides we can find a pair of new all-LED headlamps which come with advanced adaptive technology.
The side of the car actually has only one noticeable change. It is the new B-shaped wing vent added to the lower section of the fender. The window frame also has a brighter chrome compared to the one seen on the grille in fact. The rear end also features a revised bumper and some new headlights. The bulge under the trunk lid has been removed and the chrome strip under the lid is thicker now. Finally the taillights have a new B-shaped pattern which comes with two main lights instead of three.
The Usual Type of Design on the Inside
The interior of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne is also pretty similar to the previous car. We see the same dashboard covered with wood and leather and there is also the same four-spoke steering wheel with integrated controls given here. The style is the same but what they decided to add was 13 hand-selected wood veneers, bright-polished stainless steel, and a unique glass switchgear. The seats also come in two new styles, fluted or quilted. You can even chose between 24 hide colors and single or two-tone finishes.
The tech department is what got the most of the updates. The new infotainment system is what has been enhanced the most. It adds updated navigation, connectivity, and audio system. The eight-inch touchscreen is connected to a 60-gigabyte hard drive and the front seats are equipped with 10.2-inch Bentley Entertainment Tablets integrated into their backs. Also offered is a Naim for Bentley premium sound system with 20 speakers, 20 channels, a 2,200-watt amplifier, and Super Tweeters.
No Changes under the Hood
Under the hood of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne we will get the same 6.75-liter V-8. Unfortunately it keeps the same output and performance as they have failed to add any improvements in regards to power. The output remains at 505 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain will also combine with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
0-60 mph and Top Speed Performance
Not changing the powertrain for the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne also means that the acceleration stats and top speed remain the same. The car speeds up to 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and also has a top speed of 184 mph. The Extended Wheelbase version boasts more weight so it will probably be a lot slower than the base version but specs for it have not been released.
Reported Fuel Economy and Emissions
Thanks to some of the additions to the powertrain of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne, they have also been updates for the fuel economy a little bit. The engine comes with cylinder deactivation and variable cam phasing, which helps to reduce the CO2 emissions to 342 g/km, while the fuel economy comes to a combined rating of 19.3 mpg. According to the EPA city drive consumption is 11 mpg while highway driving is 18 mpg.
More Space with the Extended Wheelbase Version
Although the size and the dimensions of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne remain the same, they have made an Extended Wheelbase version separately available. This one offers 9.8 inches more for the wheelbase and adds even more comfort for the passengers in the back. Besides offering more legroom it also provides airline-style leg rests that extend outward and pivot.
As for the base version, it is still 219.5 inches long with a base wheelbase of 128.6 inches. The width of the car amounts to 75.8 inches and the height is 59.9 inches. Within the normal wheelbase vehicles the passenger volume amounts to 107 cu ft and we also get 16 cu ft of cargo space.
This 2018 Bentley Mulsanne will come with a standard set of active and passive safety features, like you would find in any Bentley on the market. Perhaps the most advanced pieces of safety equipment added include the High Beam Assist, and Automatic Stability Control with collision mitigation features. The car will also add Blind Spot Warning, which activates between 10 and 250 km/h, predicts the possibility of a collision, and gives visual warnings to the driver.
2018 Bentley Mulsanne Rivals
The luxury and the brand of the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne cannot be denied and there are so few vehicle in the segment which can actually rival the car in terms of everything that it has to offer. The closest competitor is the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series-II, which has more similarities with the Mulsanne than you think. It also went on for a long time before getting updated and it provides similar comfort and performance rates, making it a perfect substitute if you are not into the latest Mulsanne.
