The existence of the spy photos is always a good way to start some news, and here we have some beautiful shots of the 2018 BMW 3 Series. The new release will bring us some small changes in the exterior, minor details in the interior. The test mule is being experimented on in Europe and will be released in 2018. We also have some renderings, based on spy photos surfaced earlier this year. The vehicle has been first spotted doing cold weather tests while the latest batch of spy photos places the prototype in the forest. This just goes to show that the designers in BMW are giving it their all and are preparing the next-generation 3 Series cars to better compete in the segment of luxury models.
The codename for the production version is BMW G20 and it brings some well-known lines, already seen on the latest 5 Series and 7 Series models. The one thing that will bring this model above the rest is its youth which will most certainly bring a much sportier feel to the table. There are a lot of details that are still covered by camo and much of it is still left to our imagination. But luckily our reviewer’s keen eye has noticed the most of the parts which have been remade.
It is still a long way off before we truly get to see the new 2018 BMW 3 Series released in the fullest, but according to the announcements we can probably expect to see a lot of innovations done to this car. Generally speaking, they are aiming at making a car which will at the same time have a lesser weight but larger dimensions. It also means more power and better fuel consumption. The new styling is also expected and an M-style performance will make a lot of difference for the car. With the newly debuting autonomous driving technology we also feel excited about it making it to the newest 3 Series models from BMW.
Now when we got all the initial stuff out of the way it is time to talk about some parts in more details. Since the release date will come fast, let’s see what they have in stored for us with the newest 2018 BMW 3Series car.
2018 BMW 3 Series Release Date and Price
It’s hard to say anything about the 2018 BMW 3 Series release date and price without entering the zone of fiction. There were no official details, but based on the previous versions, you could expect an average price of $34,000 and the release date somewhere at the beginning of 2018. Generally speaking the price will be higher because of the added technology and the updated features. We just hope that it does not go too far this time but it appears that they might try to make it competitive with the rivaling cars and that way give us a more affordable offer. It would be good for the fans to get a more down to earth car. But this is a BMW so do not expect too much. The mid-range price is probably going to be somewhere around $45,000 while the top-tier rated models are probably going to be sold for up to $66,000, this is probably reserved for the overtly aggressive M3 versions.
We will get to know all the trims and possible models, as the time passes, but the thing we have noticed here is that BMW wants to keep all this a secret. Every part of the vehicle was covered, and they even tried to mask the headlights so they look like the Jaguar model.
As far as the release date goes, the 2018 BMW 3 Series will make it out of the design table pretty soon, but there are no exact details on when the car might hit the streets. There are some pieces of information which hopefully announced the car as early as mid-2017. But as we see it now that that is going to be pushed back for at least the end of the year, but it will more likely be for the start of 2018. All in all, we are expecting to see the redesigned version in all of its glory appear first in Germany and it will probably cross to America soon after that. So US audiences will still feel happy about the car and its expectations.
2018 BMW 3 Series Exterior Design
The 2018 BMW 3 Series exterior is designed to be more aerodynamic than ever before. The newest platform includes the super lightweight materials like aluminum, magnesium and in some cases even carbon fiber. We don’t expect carbon fiber to be implemented anywhere on the 2018 BMW 3 Series, but we keep our hopes on. The architecture itself is designed to be compatible with the plug-in hybrids or even full electric.
All the styling details you would expect from the 2018 BMW 3 Series are there, like the kidney grille short overhangs and of course the Hofmeister kink (or Hocmeister-Knick). Low forward bend at the C-pillars or D-pillars in the case of touring vehicles or SUVs.
With all the default details, we cannot miss the front part, which seems a bit lower and wider than before, which is again, the proof that BMW goes full sport on this one.
2018 BMW 3 Series Interior Changes
Though it was difficult to see anything in the 2018 BMW 3 Series interior, we could notice a glimpse of a digital gauge cluster. That means that we can expect a high modernized interior (like Audi’s virtual cockpit), and an advanced infotainment system with voice controls. Since we all know that BMW tends to compete on the EV and semi-autonomous market, we can assume that we could see some fragments of that technology. We don’t think only of 3 Series for the 2018 but in all the models.
Do not expect them to transfer the entire Series 7 to the 3 Series model. There won’t be any gesture control nor the remote parking assistant. Maybe you can pay additionally for that kind of nerdiness.
The other commodities like leather seating, power seats, leather upholstery and additional infotainment for the back seats are going to be options. We will have an opportunity to add those options as you please, or based on how much money you want to spend. Luxury was never a problem for German vehicles, so we do not expect it to be here either.
2018 BMW 3 Series Engine
This next gen of 2018 BMW 3 Series engine will luckily get an update. We expect the 2.0 and 3.0-liter petrol engines and a diesel for a production car. We also expect some additional option of a less powerful and more eco-friendly option for the European markets. Something like 1.5 liters three-cylinder would do a trick. The lineup will even include a hybrid version and of course the full EV variant later on. It would be a waste of all those researchers if they don’t even try with the full EVs.
Those units are going to be much more powerful than the previous models were, and they will be more fuel efficient and will bring more mpg.
They will have to make this one right, at least for the sake of all that money. In the end, the BMW 3 Series is the most successful model of them all.
One of the strengths of the 3 Series has always been diversity and it will also mean that this newest model will also bring a diverse offer of engines to the table. The smallest and least powerful engine is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder which will probably and amazingly be offered for the US-spec versions. Its output is measured at 135 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. We also expect to see the mentioned 2.0-liter four-cylinders and 3.0-liter six-cylinder crossover to America with lots of updates to them. The current 320i has 180 horsepower, a number which will surely rise to 200 horsepower, while the 340i version will jump from 320 horsepower to probably 350 horses. We feel happy with those kind of updates and would be content to have them.
Hybrid engine options will be more divers and more details about it will come in the upcoming months, but we actually do not expect to see a full range of options immediately. But as far as the M-badged versions go there might be more changes for its powertrain than any other option that we have for the 2018 3 Series. What we are hopeful in seeing is that the car will need to jump from the current 425 horsepower to an output of 500 horses. It will certainly make things a lot more interesting.
As always, the 2018 BMW 3 Series is going to come with a RWD option as standard and will use the BMW’s xDrive AWD system for some of the given trims. But the transmission choices will probably be limited to an eight-speed automatic and a three-pedal manual.
2018 BMW 3 Series 0-60 mph and Top Speed
The updates that are expected to be given for the 2018 BMW 3 Series engines are probably going to do wonders for the performance. If they do update the engines in the matter it is predicted we are probably going to see much more improvements for its specs. All in all, the current acceleration stats might be trumped while the top speed will probably stay the same for now. For reference, the current time needed to reach 0-60 mph is 5.4 seconds while the top speed is limited to 155 mph for all models.
2018 BMW 3 Series Fuel Economy
Simple seeing that fact that the newest 2018 BMW 3 Series is going to come with updated and improved fuel economy helps us to see that they are planning to improve the consumption. Being that the car will employ a lot of new materials which are much lighter than the current ones speaks for its self. The curb weight of the car is at around 3569 lb now, and these numbers will go down to give it better ratings with the fuel department. The current models consumes 23 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway with a combined rating of 25 mpg. The stats are not so bad now but we would like to see them improve as well.
2018 BMW 3 Series Dimensions
With the lightweight setup the 2018 BMW 3 Series is also predicted to grow. This is perhaps contradictory but the lightweight materials and the use of aluminum and carbon fiber will help reduce the weight immensely so even with the larger dimensions the vehicle will meet its expectations. They are going to do this so they make extra room on the inside and provide more comfort for the passengers. For now there are no exact stats on how much they are going to expand but the current model is still 182.8 inches long, has a wheelbase of 110.6 inches, width of 71.3 inches and height 56.3 inches. These numbers will certainly improve in the future.
2018 BMW 3 Series Safety
Unfortunately, BMW has yet to release any information regarding the safety of the 2018 BMW 3 Series cars. But if we know BMW it will certainly be a good and secure offer for all the occupants on the inside. This is probably going to be something that we can be proud of seeing and will enjoy. Another thing is that new technology is going to be applied here as the updates are already given for the inside of the car. Expect to see some new standard and advanced safety options here.
2018 BMW 3 Series Rivals
One of the reason why BMW has decided to revamp the 2018 BMW 3 Series completely is because of the competition. You do not get to hear this as often, but the truth is that BMW has started to lose its place in the segment compared to the offers that its closest rivals have been making. The best way to do this was to start with a whole new generation of 3 Series cars, and by the looks of it we might get to see it work. The cars that BMW is keeping a close eye now are the Jaguar XE and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan versions which will no doubtedly be one of the bigger obstacles for BMW to pass.
