Kia has confirmed that the fourth-generation 2018 Kia Sportage is on the way. The production car will feature new and updated styling for the exterior and will also gain a lot of new additions for the inside of the car. They are making the cabin more driver-orientated and the passengers will also benefit from a slew of comfort enhancements. But for now there are not many information about the powertrain options for the US market, as the European one has already confirmed the existence of two gasoline options.
Kia is pushing its Sportage model this time so it can fare batter on the market, especially against the competition. The model will try to provide more quality and also get better fuel economy while at the same time being inexpensive for the buyers. The competition will certainly have a hard time with all of the given features, but it remains to be seen how this will be transferred to the customers.
After the initial pictures of the 2018 Kia Sportage model were unveiled the listing about the price was also set. But unfortunately we are still waiting for the release date to be officially confirmed. Only time will tell how the car will manage its latest generation model and we bring you our review about it so you can establish your opinion.
2018 Kia Sportage Release Date
For now the news about the release date of the 2018 Kia Sportage is scarce. The manufacturer has not confirmed when will the car drop on the market, but we can guess that it is supposed to be somewhere at the end of 2017 or at least at the very start of 2018.
What is the Price for the 2018 Kia Sportage?
As mentioned, the price list has already been set for this car the 2018 Kia Sportage. The car is available in three trims, LX, EX and SX, and also comes with FWD and AWD options. The base LX version is offered at $22,990 in FWD and $24,490 in AWD, the EX costs $25,500 for the FWD versions and $27,000 for the AWD one, and finally the SX is priced $32,500 in FWD and $34,000 in AWD. All prices are offered as a base MSRP rate.
Kia will use an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary one for its 2018 Kia Sportage model. Kia has been revamping its lineup since 2006 and they have been doing a much better job when it comes to style in recent years. They have reshaped this car by disconnecting the “tiger-nose” grille from the headlights. It is also positioned lower and wider so there is more cooling for the engine. The headlights are moved higher and they stretch a bit into the hood line.
The side of the car sees some slightly beefed up wheel arches. The lines and the crease are sharper looking and are positioned at a sharper angle as well. The roof is also different as it falls at a more gradual incline.
The rear end is very much different and it has several horizontal liens which make the car look wider. There is a long rear spoiler positioned up top and slender taillights inspired by the ones seen in the Kia Provo concept model. There is an additional dividing crease which splits the hatch while a metal strip connects the two lights together. All in all, we can say that the 2018 Kia Sportage looks a lot more fashionable this time.
The most significant improvements are saved for the inside of the 2018 Kia Sportage model. The dashboard now features plenty of horizontal lines and the interface is a bit more driver-orientated. Also added is a completely new multifunction steering wheel while the gauges are placed on the sides of the central information display.
The inside will also benefit from new color schemes with a single-tone black, Dark and Light Grey two-tone, and Black and Canyon Beige two-tone. The optional sunroof has been extended and goes all the way to 19.3-inches total as it has been extended by 4.09-inches.
Infotainment is also addressed with the addition of either a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen for the dash. It will also offer Connected Services and satellite navigation and also come with real-time traffic updates. European customers may also get DAB digital radio and all the cars come with a 160-watt, six-speaker stereo system, or optionally 320-watt, eight-speaker system from JBL.
Powertrain and Specs
We are going to get a slew of both gasoline and diesel offers for the 2018 Kia Sportage model. Kia is pursing the ability of giving more power to the car while at the same time making it fuel efficient. This might sound controversial and we will see if they manage to fulfil their plans.
The most powerful engine is the turbocharged 1.6-liter T-GDI direct injection unit. Nicknamed the “Gamma” engine, this unit is capable of making 175 horsepower, with torque rated at 195 pound-feet between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm.
There are a couple of options which have been carried over from the previous generation model, namely the 1.6-liter GDI, producing 130 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque, and the 1.7-liter CRDi diesel, producing 113 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque.
If you want better performance for your Sportage, you can opt for a 2.0-liter “R” diesel engine which makes 134 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, or 181 horsepower and a whopping 295 pound-feet of torque, as it is offered in two levels. Kia is also including a seven-speed double-clutch transmission, which is the first time this transmission is going to be used for their Kia models.
0-60 mph Performance
Having so many engines at your disposal offers different performance rates for the 2017 Kia Sportage model. But there are no official stats provided for now. The model is expected to provide an acceleration rate lower than 7 seconds needed to reach 0-60 mph while a top speed of 130 mph is also what we think could work well for the newest car.
Has the Fuel Economy Improved?
The plan for their 2018 Kia Sportage model was for it to gain more power and have better fuel economy. Some would say that this would be a dream come true but that it is still a dream for any car. Yet the EPA stats have not yet come out but the manufacturers have made great strides to make any of their offer a lot more fuel efficient than it was. We will see what they decide to do with the US-spec one and which rates will it have. The current model is able to provide us with 20 mpg city, 23 mg highway and 21 mpg combined.
Dimensions for the Car
The 2018 Kia Sportage will change the dimensions this time around. This will also benefit the aerodynamic characteristics of the car and make the drag coefficient slightly better from 0.35 to 0.33. The overall length of the car is larger, the model now measures 176.4 inches total and has gained an increase of 1.57 inches. The wheelbase now gets an increase of 1.18 inches and it comes down to 105.1inches total. The width is 73-inches and the height is 64.4-inches and these specs both remain the same as before.
Safety Perspective of the 2018 Kia Sportage
Improvements for the 2018 Kia Sportage have not only been made for the outside and inside of the car. They have also decided to make the car a lot safer. This comes with improved visibility for the car as driver’s can see a lot better thanks to the thinner pillars. The body is also a lot stronger because it is made from 51 percent of ultra-high tensile strength steel.
The model will also include new technology when it comes to safety. There are frontal and side protection airbags for the driver and front passenger and first and second row curtain airbags which come standard. Also added are the ISOFIX child seat anchor-points, Vehicle Stability Management system and other autonomous safety equipment like ear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, lane departure warning, automatic braking, and a speed limit information function.
The rivaling models for the 2018 Kia Sportage mostly consist of two models. The cars to watch out for which have similar properties are the Nissan Rogue and Mazda CX-5.
