The newest 2018 Subaru Impreza is upon us. What is interesting with this design is that it is a 5-door model and will make its debut within the upcoming year. The original concept for the 5-door Impreza was shown at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and it took them some time to transition from the concept to the production version but it will finally be here as the release date is almost but ready.
After the debut of the concept we were able to see a more production ready version of the car showcased at the 2016 New York Auto Show. The transition from the concept to what we have known is not as nearly as aggressive as the concept was. But luckily some of the parts did and although we see a significantly toned down version it is still an impressive display of design provided by Subaru. What we also came to learn is that the sedan version will ride on the same global architecture as the hatchback and it will come with Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system.
An additional innovation here is the newest boxer engine which will also be applied here, which is certainly something to be excited about. Subaru would usually get our hopes up with a very fabulous looking concept and then they would come out with a pretty standard and boring looking production vehicle, but this time they have turned things around and have kept some of the cool stuff they promised they would.
Our review will help you understand how much has the 2018 Subaru Impreza changed and what we can expect from the newest model.
When is the Release Date of the 2018 Subaru Impreza Production Car?
After the showcasing of the 2018 Subaru Impreza in New York, there was no official announcement made about when the car would appear on the market. But as things go we are probably looking at a release date coming by mid-2017. The model is still labeled as a 2018 model car but the vehicle will become available for sale a lot earlier than that.
Is There Going to be a Price Increase?
It appears that the latest version of the 2018 Subaru Impreza will indeed feature a small bump in its price. The model will be pricier between $100 and $1,000, depending on the type of trim you are going for. It also depends on the type of the engine you are using as the 2018 Imrpeza will have more in its offer. We start at a price of $18,895 as a base MSRP rating, while the highest is the $24,595 for the high-spec one.
Exterior Design of the 2018 Subaru Impreza
Compared to the concept version, the 2018 Subaru Impreza looks much more toned down. The front end features a smoothed front fascia with a small integrated lip below the air dam. The headlights are much more refined and the corner vents are a bit smaller. The chrome flick that points towards the air dam is still there and it makes an overall sporty appearance of the front end of the car. The side of the hatchback is identical to its sedan form below the waistline. There is the same body line above the side skirts and same line that runs from the outer tip of the headlights back to the tip of the taillights.
The rear end of the 2018 Impreza has a more dominating overhang. We get a black trim on each side of the hatch glass and taillights extend onto the hatch in the same way they extend onto the decklid. The rear fascia is almost identical in every way except for the distinct body line below the taillights, also below the insert of the fascia is completely different from the sedan version. Finally, the car will run on some alloy wheels which start from 15-inch one and extend to 18-inch ones, depending on the type of trim you decide to go with.
Inside Redesign and Updates Made
The front end of the 2018 Subaru Impreza hatchback is identical to the sedan version, which was to be expected. In the front, the base model has a 6.5-inch multimedia touchscreen featuring Apply CarPlay and Android Auto. Power windows come standard and there is a multifunction display used as a driver’s information center helping you see all the necessary information about the car. Of course the higher trims will take all of this to a whole new level with Subaru’s Starlink safety and security, an 8.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a Harman/Kardon premium audio system.
Compared to the sedan version, Subaru Impreza 2018 will have more headroom in the back because of an extended roof. The rear seats get a 60/40 folding design, which allows you additional cargo room if needed. Upper trims of the car will offer Bluetooth connectivity, iPod control, and smartphone integration, with their Starlink media system and the display screens will also get bigger as the higher you go with the trims.
Powertrain Choices for the 2018 Subaru Impreza
Under the hood of the 2018 Subaru Impreza hatchback version is a revamped FB 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. This is probably the best part transferred from the concept car and we are more than excited to see it. The output will amount to 152 horsepower, which is 4 horsepower more than the previous version. It does not seem so much in terms of the performance but it is the drivability and maneuvering that have improved immensely for the Impreza.
0-60 mph and Top Speed
But with the improvements made to the boxer engine, the 2018 Subaru Impreza will also be able to improve its acceleration ability. In fact we are looking at an improvement which will amount to 8.6 seconds of time needed to reach 0-60 mph and a top speed in the 125- to 130-mph range.
Fuel Economy Ratings Improving
As far as looking at the fuel economy of the 2018 Subaru Impreza we have a smaller improvement. But actually it is not so much significant, but it does show us that they are working on making things better. The 5-door hatchback is rated at 28/37/31 mpg by the EPA, while the sedan version has a 28 mpg city, 38 highway, 32 combined rating. In its Sport trims version the numbers are going to differ a bit, meaning that the hatchback and the sedan make 27 mpg city and 30 mpg combined, but different in the highway consumption with 36-mpg for the sedan and 35 mpg for the hatchback.
The size of the 2018 Subaru Impreza is still the same. They did not tamper with any of the details in regards to the 5-door hatchback version and the numbers state a full length of 175.6 inches, wheelbase 105.1 inches, width 70.0 inches and height of 57.3 in. Inside the passengers get to enjoy a spacing of 97-100 cu ft while the cargo bed provides 21 cu ft.
The Safety Features are improving
The 2018 Subaru Imrpeza has already been given a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS and a Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with the option Eyesight Driver Assist system. The global platform which is used will further improve the crash test scores and it was stated that it can expand upon the absorption for about 40 percent. Within all trims of the Impreza we get front seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag as standard equipment, while driver-assist technologies include Reverse Automatic Braking and steering lines integrated with the standard rear view camera is also made available. The EyeSight system is an optional package which provides many advanced safety features also available for the latest model.
The competition cars which might be alternatives to the 2018 Subaru Impreza include a few models which you would probably not mind having. These are of course the Mazda 3 model and the Ford FoTop Safety Pick by the IIHS that have been very lucrative offers in the segment so far. The Impreza offers a completely new setup now which might offer an alternative compared to these ones.
