Perhaps the name 2018 Toyota 86 sounds new to you and as well is should, but it is actually an old and familiar car which has changed brand names. Scion is being discontinued and will offer its last model at the New York Auto Show, but some of its products will live on as they are being overtaken by Toyota. One of these products is the Toyota 86 which was formerly known as the Scion FR-S. New pictures and new information have been released about this car and the latest information says that we will be able to see it officially at the upcoming NY Auto Show.
It was not planned for the car which make the transition from Scion to Toyota to change names, but it was stated that they finally decided for the car getting a global name and this has been made due to popular demand for sports cars.
So will Toyota given the former FR-S model the acclaim that it deserves? We are hoping that the name change is not the only thing that they do. For now we do not have the full list of changes which were made but there are many things that are already know. As the release date gets nearer we will be able to see much more of the 2018 Toyota 86 model.
When is the 2018 Toyota 86 Release Date?
The new 2018 Toyota 86 model will be showcased at the very same show where Scion is offering their final products. The New York Auto Show will mark the end of Scion but also the start of the overtaking thatToyota is doing. The future 86 model will be seen for the first time here while the release date will be determined sometime in the future. The most obvious choice is for it to be released by the end of the year.
What will the 2018 Toyota 86 Price be?
The prices will be already familiar when the 2018 Toyota 86 makes its first showcasing in New York. The car will have a base MSRP of $26,255 with the six-speed manual transmission while the six-speed automatic one will be priced at $26,975.
What are the 2018 Toyota 86 Exterior Updates?
Although there are going to be some change for the exterior of the 2018 Toyota 86 it still has many pieces which make it recognizable as a FR-S model. The hood and the front fender position is still the same. The headlight assembly is still set up the same but such inclusions as LEDs are added. Down below there is a much larger grille and is combined with black trim inserts. It is still sporty looking but in our opinion it looks a lot better than the previous model.
The side view does not show many differences compared to the previous model but the vent inserts on the fenders have changed drastically. The side mirror is the same and the same thing goes for the side windows. The car will use on twisted, 10-spoke alloy wheels to ride on and they will come in 17- or 18-inche sizes.
The rear end has the same shaped taillights which have LED units. The rear fascia has more defined body lines while the rear diffuser is familiar but still managed to change. All in all, the changes may be minor here but they still make the car look a little bit more aggressive compared to last time.
2018 Toyota 86 Interior Design
Although the interior of the 2018 Toyota 86 looks similar to the car it replaces, it still has plenty of novelties added for it. The general design is the same but the center vents are positioned a bit higher and they pop up more as well. The instrument cluster is the same as in the FR-S model but there are some new features for the steering wheel. We still have the round, three spoke wheel but it has new audio-control buttons on the left spoke.
The entire dash and the door trim panels are now made of a soft touch material called “Grandlux.” The car also uses silver contrast stitching in order to hold the materials together and the same is seen for the steering wheel and the gearshifter knob. You will also see a new Pioneer touchscreen unit in the dash which looks much fresher compared to the last model.
Power plant Changes
The people from Toyota have not released many information about the 2018 Toyota 86 engine choice. We are potentially looking at the same V-6 model that was used in the FR-S car but there are going to be some updates made to the drivetrain which are supposed to address the output. The suspension has been tuned up and we are looking at a car which has better controls. Now they are making it easy to distribute the 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque that the engine makes.
What is the 2018 Toyota 86 0-60 mph Acceleration Time?
As far as it has been reported, even with the changes to the powertrain the 2018 Toyota 86 will have the same top speed and acceleration as before. The model will still go to 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds while the top speed of the car is limited to 136 mph.
Fuel Economy for the 2018 Toyota 86
With the top speed not changing it appears that the fuel economy of the 2018 Toyota 86 will not change so much as well. This new model will have similar characteristics when it comes to fuel consumption with the FR-S car. We are looking at potentially 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined for this new car. It will still be suitable for the segment even if the rates stay exactly the same.
Dimensions of the new 2018 Toyota 86
As far as dimensions go, the 2018 Toyota 86 will not have the same name as its predecessor but will transfer its size. The car remains 166.7 inches long with a wheelbase of 101.2 inches. The height is 50.6 inches while the width is 69.9 inches. The passenger volume offers 80 cu ft of space while the cargo bay is 7 cu ft.
The new 2018 Toyota 86 will inherit some standard safety characteristics as all the cars in the lineup. We do mean six airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability and traction control. There are also some specific additions like hill start assist, a rearview camera and even a limited-slip differential.
We can transfer the crash test rating from the FR-S as the 86 model has still not had its crash testing done. So the NHTSA gave it a four-star score for frontal crash protection and five stars for rollover protection. It earns it a 5-star overall score and the IIHS has rated it “Good” overall as well, but only “Acceptable” in the tough small-overlap frontal test.
Potential Rivaling Cars
Even with the new name, the 2018 Toyota 86 will have the same rivals as before with the old name. The car will be featured in the same segment as before and will have cars like the Honda Civic to think about and the Hyundai Veloster.
