Taught by the past, we are looking forward to the new 2018 Toyota Highlander. We have no official data about the next model but we can only imagine the possibilities. Hybrids and EVs are pushing the boundaries every single day. All the manufacturers are following the trend, and that makes us all happy. Why? This is the age of Industrial Revolution. Everything is new and, like some uncharted territory, exotic and exciting. We expect a wider range of hybrid engines for the 2018 Toyota Highlander and more efficient petrol engines. From the stylistic point of view, exterior and interior have to be updated with some new colors, materials, and technologies.
Update: Many people thing that with the upcoming 2018 Toyota Highlander model, the Japanese automakers has managed to produce their best Highlander model yet. It is a highly valuable vehicle with many things which go their way. This is a three-row SUV model which is capable of seating up to eight people, and it also marks Toyota’s entry in a fast paste and fast growing segment like not many others. But the vehicle does manage to compensate with great safety scores, a very versatile interior and a new and very powerful V-6 engine option which not many other rivaling cars are going to compete against.
But what we are all excited about to hear is the inclusion of the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid option. This one promises to be the most fuel efficient version in the segment. It is something which will give the Highlander an edge in the competitive crossover segment. We feel excited about this one and include it in our update which gives you the latest news about this car.
2018 Toyota Highlander Release Date And Price
Since we don’t have anything official to work with, no Spy Shots (everyone from Toyota was so careful) and no leaks from “company men” we cannot be sure when to expect the exact 2018 Toyota Highlander released and/or price. If they finish the development early next year, start the marketing campaign in spring they could theoretically prepare the vehicle for the autumn or winter release.
The price is not all flowers and rainbows. Projected price for the base version will be higher than the current one and will go north from $30,000.
Update: We finally have an update for the release date for the 2018 Toyota Highlander. The vehicle has been announced for its initial appearance in the start of 2018. This is still happening and we are now able to learn that it will be somewhere in February. Perhaps some people have expected it to come earlier than this but in fact it is the best that we can hope for.
Huge Steps Forward For Toyota
Toyota is a huge company and they have just started to move their productions in too many different directions. One of them is the activation of every possible asset they have in the TRD department and the other which is the most significant is Toyota Works Motor Corp. They are all collaborating to make the best possible hybrid or EV.
Toyota Racing Development will produce the top of the line construction, materials, designs and engine options, while the Toyota Works Motor Corp. has some great plans for their future batteries.
TWMC is currently developing advanced Lithium-ion batteries which will bring Toyota even closer to the range of the Tesla autos. The main goal is to have a proper patent which will be Toyota’s trademark in that field. Their advancement is already visible in the newest Toyota Prius. The range is two times longer than on the previous models.
Those steps are going to get Toyota to the top of the food chain. They are moving slowly but affordable for the majority of customers, which we cannot say for the Tesla.

2018 Toyota Highlander Exterior
The 2018 Toyota Highlander exterior is not the thing that should bother anyone. Its design has changed only slightly over the years, but they have some “touches” unique only to them. The big grille is an example of something you cannot miss during the casual highway drive. The quality of the details will go up with models and trims. Headlights and taillights have lived through only a few of the modifications through years. Even on the newest model, you have some minor cosmetic details here and there, but nothing that could make you smile. Nothing new. We can only hope for some more radical changes, not connected to the grille. Leave that grille alone.
One of the cues we still like the current version of the Toyota Highlander is the back glass. You can open it without opening the cargo space. Only a few crossovers have that option.
Update: Many facts about the 2018 Toyota Highlander’s exterior are already familiar. But we have recently come to learn some newest additions made for the SE version. Compared to other trims in the lineup, the Highlander SE is going to tone things down when it comes to the usage of chrome. Instead it offers dark grille slats and 12-spoke wheels which are also darker. This is something that people would have probably wanted to see some 20 years ago from the model, but we see it working fine even now. The model gives us some innovations now and brings forth a different color for the segment.
2018 Toyota Highlander Interior
The one thing we didn’t like is the lack of options for the 2018 Toyota Highlander interior. We don’t have some high hopes for it in the future either. Toyota was very brave to implement the third row. They even got the second and third seat foldable so you have some extra space in your cargo area. But that is not enough. You can get to the third row fairly easily (the second-row seats are adjustable), but you tend to bump your head after hitting every pebble on the road. Those things need to be fixed. So, we expect the 2018 Toyota Highlander to be:
- A little higher than this year’s model (we don’t want to play ball with the ceiling anymore)
- A little bit wider than this year’s model (my elbow doesn’t want to be molested by the door anymore)
- Better infotainment system (the current one is fine, but we all want new gadgets, right?)
- And maybe some 22” central screen like in “some other car” but that is a far fetch.
Update: We have already learned about the interior of the 2018 Toyota Highlander and it too will be one of the points of the car which are going to be very likable. Once again the comfort and the simple yet innovative way that the interior has been refurbished just shows that the vehicle is heading to a very favorable direction. We have recently learned that all of the versions have power-adjustable seats for the front passengers. Btu when it comes to XLE models and above it is where things start getting better for the passengers. The passenger’s seats in the higher trims will be immensely updated and it provides added comfort for the people being driven in this car.
2018 Toyota Highlander Engine
The heart of the vehicle has always been its engine, and the 2018 Toyota Highlander has a lineup of three engines. That line could become longer when/if Toyota manages to make a revolution with its new battery. The base version should have a 2.7-liter I4 engine with 185 hp; the second, more advanced with 3.5 Liter V6 engine and 295 hp tamed with 8 speed automatic; and the final one with 3.5 Liter Hybrid which is already has a better fuel economy ant gets somewhere around 28-29 mpg in the city drive.
Update: It was finally revealed which powertrain the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid version is going to come with. Under the hood you can find the V-6 engine which is going to be compared with two electric motors and a 45 kw nickel-metal hydride battery. It will come with an all-wheel drive and will probably make 306 hp combined. Not bad at all for this car. It was also confirmed that the EPA ratings for this kind of a setup are going to amount to 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined, or 21/27/23 mpg with the all-wheel drive.
2018 Toyota Highlander Top Grade Safety
The 2018 Toyota Highlander model can really boast with new safety specs. It is still something that we have seen before but things to the newest package the model jumps into the top tier position in the segment. It will give us the use of Toyota Safety Sense-P package, which includes ll the necessary pieces that a top safe car needs. It adds forward collision warnings with full-speed automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam and active lane control.
The 2018 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size SUV which is next in the line to implement Hybrid versions in its default core offer. The information about it is very scarce, but you can expect it to be more expensive than the current models due to the price of development and improved interior.
It will have three versions of engines, including one Hybrid (at least). If some newer information comes up, you will be updated.
