This is an age of change. Small city cars are becoming more robots than cars, cars powered by batteries have already become a “thing,” and massive SUVs and trucks are not some huge spenders anymore. Of course those new vehicles we are talking about need time to become the mainstream, but this is a good start.
Together with the fully electric cars, we are getting a shy example of a substitute in an image of hybrids. That’s precisely what we are getting from the new SUVs, and that is just what we are going to get from the new models. Let’s see what to expect from 2018.
2018 BMW X5
The last time we got to see the prototype of the 2018 BMW X5 was in August of 2017. Back then we saw a small change in the front fascia and some tiny details on the side skirts and the general aerodynamics. However, the biggest and the most obvious change was in the design and the technology of the headlights and the new automatic transmission for all the versions of the X5 luxury SUV. There is also a new backup camera as standard equipment. There are also some details regarding the engine options and the trim levels, but these are the most significant changes.
The release date is scheduled for this Fall of 2017 and prices will go up between $150 and $350.
2018 Toyota Tacoma
Because of the competition and the speed Toyota’s competitors are developing their new projects, Tacoma has to have a hybrid version in a very near future. If Ford could do invest a little bit more into a hybrid technology, and if they could implement the hybrid tech into their F150, why wouldn’t Toyota even try to do it?
Some of the most significant improvements are going to be closely tied to the general safety of the passengers. Toyota has developed the new Toyota Safety Sense Tech Package. That system is going to take a good care of all the occupants and the pedestrians and other cars. That package is coming to 2018 Toyota Tacoma and all the new Toyota cars.
The exact release date has not been confirmed we are expecting it to be sometime in the winter of 2017.
2018 Honda Pilot
As far as the mid-size crossover SUVs go, the 2018 Honda Pilot is a good vehicle. It will not make your heart go pumping it is not the most beautiful SUV (crossover) out there, but it is a cool vehicle for your family. It is meant for larger families, road trips and a perfect partner for the everyday life. It has great safety ratings, good fuel consumption, and a cozy interior. What else do you want?
The main change is going to be a shorter wheelbase. Drivers argued that the vehicle is too long, so they are finally going to get an option of a shorter model. The model is going to share the same platform with Acura MDX and Odyssey minivan. Another thing that could be changed is the ground clearance and the exclusion of the previously available safety option – lane watch assist. This is a technology that is living on the borrowed time at it has already been kicked out of some other models.
Since there are no many details which we can vouch for, we can’t say anything about the price. It will probably go out sometime during the first half of 2018. However, all the data we have is not ground-solid.
2018 Honda CR-V
This compact crossover is shorter than its relative Honda Pilot. We don’t expect some major updates considering all the changes it went through during the development process for the 2017 model.
Two engines are going to be offered for this release, and both of them are going to have a CVT and available FWD and AWD configurations.
The most important 2018 Honda CR-V updates are going to be made in performance dynamics, handling and of course a hybrid version. The CR-V Hybrid will feature unique exterior design details that are going to make it more distinguishable from the classic model. The system will have two motors paired with 2.0 liter I-4, just like on the Accord Hybrid. The hybrid version was revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show in September 2017.
2018 Toyota Supra
The new 2018 Toyota Supra is going to take a lot from the FT-1 concept just like we all speculated earlier. Also, the design and the technology are heavily related to BMW’s Z4 since they have an agreement about the joint development of Supra and Z4, “Product development of each and every car costs you a couple of billion dollars and the roadster segment is, unfortunately, declining over the last couple of years. That is not only for us, the BMW but every single manufacturer”, according to BMW Australia CEO Marc Werner.
Rumors related to powertrain options are not something we would trust. That leaked info has to flip-flopped over and over again throughout the last couple of months. The first rumors were that Supra would not have a manual, and the Z4 would have. A week after it, the contradictory evidence surfaced. The most recent leaks claim that Supra will have a 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6 Engine which was developed by Toyota and BMW. Before that, we had some rumors about the inline 6 for supra and a turbocharged 4-cylinder.
Everything will be much clearer during the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show which will open its doors to the general public on October 25th, 2017.
2018 Mazda 6
The main trick with Mazda’s is that they all look sportier and more expensive than they are. However, this 6th generation will not change much. You can even call it a 2017.5 Mazda 6. The most noticeable 2018 Mazda 6 update is going to be the Smart City Brake Support as standard equipment for all the trim levels and the i-ELOOP regenerative braking option. The fully redesigned Mazda 6 is not expected to come out before the 2019 model year.
2018 Volkswagen Jetta
The information about the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is scarce at the moment, but we do have some new photos of an undisguised model.
The model is going to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the first week of December 2017. The undisguised model was seen in something that should be VW Mexican facility. As we could see, the new Jetta looks wider than the current model and has a unique grille. However, the leaked model looks like a stripped down version or some low spec model.
The model will be a bit longer than the current one with different headlights and taillights. The interior is going to be a bit roomier, and mechanically, the 2018 VW Jetta is most probably going to get the new 1.5-liter TSI EVO engine.
2018 Porsche Cayenne
While 2018 Porsche Cayenne is nothing strange right now, when it first came out in 2002, it was heavily ridiculed. Haters can hate, but this vehicle was and still is the real sports utility vehicle. When we say “sports” we mean that.
The 2018 Porsche Cayenne was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and the company has already shown all the capabilities of their third generation Cayenne to journalists.
The news is that 2018 Porsche Cayenne will get a diesel engine eventually. It also has a Turbo S E-Hybrid version in the works, but that is the only way Cayenne is getting electrified.
There are three engines in total:
- 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 with 340 hp and 450Nm of torque;
- 2.9 liter twin turbo V6 (Cayenne S) with 440 hp and 550 Nm of torque.
- 4.0 liter twin turbo in the Cayenne Turbo with 550 hp and 770 Nm of torque
All the engines are going to feature a new central turbo layout inside the cylinder V. This SUV will sprint from 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds and 3.9 seconds with the most powerful optional package. The top speed of the 2018 Porsche Cayenne is going to be 245km/h, Porsche Cayenne S – 265 km/h, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo 286 km/h.
Those journalists that had an opportunity actually to drive inside the 2018 Cayenne say that it is impressive on and off-road.
2018 Mazda CX 5
The all-new 2018 Mazda CX 5 has sharp new looks on the outside, and the rich premium looks on the inside. The most important update for this 2018 Mazda CX 5 is its diesel engine and its fuel economy. Of course, it will be offered in two ways.
- The base level will be 2.0 liter four cylinder engine with 155 hp and 150 pound feet of torque;
- The second version will the 2.5 liter four cylinder with 187 hp and 185 pound feet of torque;
- Third option is a 2.2 liter four cylinder Skyactiv-D turbodiesel with 150 hp, and 280 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm. The most interesting thing about it is that you simply can’t notice that its actually a diesel version.
It will be released early next year.
2018 Ford Excursion
Unfortunately, 2018 Ford Excursion will not arrive in its rumored “original” edition. In the end, the original edition was only a dream of some. The reality is that Ford Excursion saw its last days in 2005 when it was discontinued. The true successor of it was Ford Expedition EL, and it is now the Ford Expedition MAX and Platinum MAX. That is the name of its newest alteration, and it is far better than anything we could ever expect.
The time off for the first Excursion has long passed. Now we have to be satisfied with what we get. In 2005 the Ford Excursion was discontinued. Its idea and technology were transferred to be a trim level for another model, Ford Expedition. The trim level was Ford Expedition EL.
The 2018 Ford Excursion will, in fact, be 2018 Ford Expedition MAX.
The 2018 Ford Excursion release date or to be more precise the release of the newest 2018 Ford Expedition MAX is scheduled for the November of 2017. The production started on September 25th, 2017.
The 2018 Ford Excursion price or the price of the 2018 Ford Expedition MAX is expected to go all the way to $55,580, while you would have to save $76,595 for the Platinum MAX edition and $79,740 for the Platinum MAX 4×4 edition.
The same engine will go through all the trim levels. That will be the 3.5 liters turbocharged EcoBoost engine with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
The Fuel Consumption has not been tested yet, so we don’t have the exact numbers.
BONUS – 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is going to be the last one of this generation. Although it is made on the old platform, it keeps impressing every single one of us. Its off-road capabilities, its comfort, the technologies in it, engine choices, and much more. However, in spite of its crude nature and the traditionally capable off-road skills, it devours the fuel, it has a mediocre warranty coverage, and it is not as spacious as its rivals.
There are two gasoline engines and one diesel engine in the offer, and all three drives the rear or all four wheels and are tamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Of course, you will get a reliable working horse with a top of the line audio system and a bunch of safety technologies. It will not fail you in two lifetimes, but only if you have enough money for all the fuel, it can eat.
It is a pure off-road vehicle. One of a kind – Jeep!
