All eyes are not pointing at the newest 2021 Audi R8 model which is getting an update. There is some stellar news about this car as we are getting both the upgraded base version and there is also a special edition Sport model underway. The current model has been getting stagnant in facing the competition, so it was due time to get an upgrade. The R8 model made its debut in 2007 and back then it was a fresh new take for the segment. It gave drivers a different kind of an option and actually it provided us with a lesser expensive version of the then Lamborghini and Ferrari supercars. But after years of following the same formula, it is time for an update. Even the use of the V10 engine does not help here as drivers are looking for something more in-depth to change. The car made its official debut at the recent Geneva Auto Show and we are also looking forward to the Special Edition Sport Audi R8 which was also announced.
But the redesign part of this model should be taken loosely here as the vehicle retains most of the looks and design cues from the previous model. It looks pretty much the same and has inherited most of the pieces that the car has. This is something that Audi does frequently as they are mostly known for making cars which are similar and are mostly known for making smaller updates to newer vehicle. But if we look inside the car, we will see more changes happening. This time they have concentrated on making the interior more advanced and have done a lot of work there, making the car almost indistinguishable compared to the last version.
Another interesting piece of news is the Special Edition Sport Audi R8 version. The road car may struggle to fit in the new market as the competition is going to be pretty heavy. But the race model has done a great job as it has won a lot of races and titles over the years. Audi is also planning to celebrate its success with the newest Sport version which is going to be made as a limited edition model. In fact, only 200 units of this edition are going to be made so if you want one you better get on board quickly. The idea behind this car is for it to be a tribute to the R8 LMS model. The interior will be similar to the newest second-generation one but the outside will be unique as it will have the silver, red, and black color scheme which will show off its racing background. But under the hood of the car, things are not going to change as they are merely going to transfer everything from the current race car. This might be disappointing to hear but the outgoing model is already powerful enough so there were not a lot of ways for them to go from there.
Since the release date is getting closer we saw it fitting to release our review about the 2021 Audi R8 model, so here are our thoughts.
When is the Release Date of the 2021 Audi R8 V10 being expected?
The release date of the 2021 Audi R8 V10 has already been announced. After seeing the car at the latest Geneva Auto Show in its fullest for the first time, we were also treated with a date for its release which will come in mid-2020. The vehicle is already in high demand, but it still not clear how well it will fare within the niche it competes in. Many other vehicles have already taken the front row here so the comeback that Audi R8 is planning to do with its 2021 version night be a long and hard one. As for the Special Edition Sport model, this one is going to debut in 2021 after the initial release of the base model.
What is the Price that we can Expect?
The pricing of the 2021 Audi R8 V10 cars has already been announced. It will be offered at the same price for the version which comes with an automatic transmission. So you will be able to get it for a base MSRP of $162,900. But we also have the V10 Plus version which is much more expensive than the first one and will be offered for $189,900. The Plus version is going to be much more expensive compared to the previous Plus version as it will get an upgrade of $7,000 to its final price tag.
Not a Very Extensive Update for the Outside
Even though they said that the 2021 Audi R8 V10 is an upgraded version, it does not seem so. Audi probably does not want to mess up the style of the vehicle so much and wants to keep the R8 recognizable. This could be a mistake as there are people who have been expecting more of a change and do not see the small reshaping as appropriate for the brand. This could be both good and bad for the brand but we will see which ones of the two we get in the end.
The front end added a new kind of a grille that seems bolder and has a different kind of a mesh. The bumper is smaller and comes with vertical slats. The headlights are changed as well and they have straight edges instead of the curvy ones that we had before. The Euro-spec versions of the R8 are going to get laser high-beam headlights that have a camera inside of them and help with the appropriate high beam distribution. This feature has not yet been approved for the US.
The rear part of the car has new taillights which are slightly revised. They add a different kind of graphics and there is a new kind of a mesh grille in the back. The tailpipes come with a trapezoidal shape and the gap between the pipes is now bigger. As far as the Plus trim goes, it adds a carbon-fiber-reinforced wing, which helps at higher speeds and also differentiates the two apart.
Interior Modifications and Upgrades
The interior redesign of the 2021 Audi R8 V10 is more noticeable than the exterior one. We see how this car has grown on the inside and it displays some pretty good and modem modifications. The first thing you notice is the race-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel which hosts more controls than before and the racy bucket seats which are there to provide more sport for your back. The seats are actually going to be an optional offer for the base version but come start of the V10 Plus models.
Audi is also including their virtual cockpit as well which you can operate using a 12.3-inch screen. The screen will also stand in the place of MMI screen and the instrument gauges and you can reconfigure the display however way you wish it to be. The dashboard and the center stack also went through a redesign as well and you will see even from there that the six-speed manual transmission is completely replaced with the only option being the S Tronic transmission.
In order to make the interior of the 2021 Audi R8 V10 as exclusive as it can be, there are various optional cover choices that buyers can decide on when purchasing the car. They include an Alcantara-and pearl Nappa leather combination or full fine Nappa leather. You can also use a clear-coated carbon-fiber trim or diamond stitching which are also offered optionally.
Generally speaking, the cabin is what makes the biggest difference between the outgoing and the 2021 version. It actually feels like a new generation model and it provides us with a lot that we can use and a lot that we will certainly need when operating this car.
Some Interesting Changes for the Powertrain of the 2021 Audi R8 V10
The most important part of every car is, of course, its powertrain and the 2021 Audi R8 V10 is going to make an important decision when it comes to the drivetrain for the 2021 version. The thing is that we are now only left with the V10 option as the 4.2-liter V-8 engine is going to be left out from further usage for this car. They have also modified and upgraded the engine a little bit so we have more power to both the versions of the car. The R8 V10 is going to make 540 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, while the Plus V10 is expected to produce 610 hp and 413 pound-feet of torque. Another change is the fact that the 6-speed manual transmission that has been used for a number of years will be excluded this time and the only option left will be the S Tronic dual-clutch transmission. But we feel that this is something which is going to help the car reach higher limits and provide better performance.
0-60 mph and Top Speed Performance
When we talk about specs and performance of the 2021 Audi R8 V10 car, we immediately think fo speed. Thanks to the changes that have been made to the powertrain of the car we are going to see some updates and some changes made to the specs. First of all the 0-60 mph performance now amounts to 3.5 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds faster than the last version and it also has a top speed of 201 mph, which is 6 mph faster than the last model. The Plus trim can reach 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds, 0.8 seconds faster, and a top speed of 205 mph, or 8 mph faster than before.
Fuel Consumption for the 2021 Audi R8 V10
The fuel economy is going to slightly improve for the 2021 Audi R8 V10. The car is lighter and faster and they did manage to squeeze in a few improvements when it comes to the amount of fuel it consumes. For now, the given ratings for both versions include only the combined rating for fuel consumption. The base version will consume 20 mpg while the Plus version is rated 19 mpg by the EPA.
Size and Weight
One of the newest features and innovations for the 2021 Audi R8 V10 model is the weight loss the car comes with. This is all thanks to the new multi-material lightweight construction that Audi has made possible for its newest products. It will shed a lot of excess weight and make this car extremely light. Thus the R8 V10 now has a total curb weight of 3,428 pounds, and it is a 110-pound weight loss compared to the previous model. This will affect the fuel economy and the performance of the car in a very much positive way.
The newest 2021 version of the Audi R8 is going to be 76.4 inches wide and 48.8 inches tall. This is actually a 0.6-inch decrease in length but it also makes the car 0.4 inch wider and positioned 0.5 inches lower. The wheelbase has not changed and still amounts to 104.3 inches. The full length of the car is 174 in and the height is 48.8 in.
Safety and Security for the Car
The 2021 Audi R8 V10 will get a full package of standard safety equipment. Even though supercars like this one do not really get crash tested, we will not know what the exact capability of the car is. But we do know that it will be using a carbon fiber space frame which can absorb an impact better and that it will come with such equipment as a rearview camera, a parking sensor and six airbags which are meant to protect the occupants on the inside and keep everyone safe.
Will the Competition Be Kind to the 2021 Audi R8 V10?
This is actually the biggest question related to the 2021 Audi R8 V10 vehicle. The competition models have grown recently and have put out their own vehicles which have overpassed the R8 in recent years. The R8 had a very tumulus start and has been an interesting addition to the lack of clustered market. But as years went by, it was the Audi R8 that started going down and the competition that got better. This brought forth many new vehicles which now include moles like Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and the Porsha 911 Turbo. Both will have a kind of advantage compared to the new R8 that Audi brings in 2021 and only time will tell if the update they bring will be a competitive one.
