2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata Release Date, Price and Specs

2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata review

With the new 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata we are getting a small update for this vehicle. Not a lot has been added but it is going to add small parts to the car which were perhaps overlooked when the fourth-generation model came out. The current generation MX-5 Miata is their most successful model to date and it is great that they are keeping things mostly clear with it.

The first time the Mazda MX-5 Miata was seen was in 1989 and this model is known as one of the best-selling convertible models which came out of Mazda. Its history spans for 21 years on the market and it has spawned four-generation models within the period. The current 4th-gen vehicle is perhaps the most impressive vehicle that they have made and has earned a lot of awards already, so it is pretty hard to top what they did with that version of the car.

The outgoing Miata is a compact sports roadster car with an RWD and an exceptional style which it owes to the Shinari concept on which it has based the design. The innovations that they have made with that new version of the car were to significantly reduce the weight and change the dimensions of the car. It resulted in the car being much lighter and it earned it higher performance, improved fuel efficiency, and drivability.

After the release of the initial pictures of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata we felt reluctant that we had to release our take and our review.

When is the Release Date of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata?

The newest 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is set to make its debut around the end of this year. The updated version will hit the market just towards the end of the fourth quarter of the year, which would make it an early entry for the 2021 fleet of Mazda cars.

What is the Price?

The newest updated 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is going to retain the similar prices that are given for the current car. The base model is priced $24,915 with a manual shifter while the automatic version costs $25,990. The higher trims include the Club trim, priced $28,600 and the Gran Touring which you will be able to get for $30,065.

Exterior Appearance of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata

As it appears the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is going to have a very similar appearance to the current model. The biggest innovation that the new-gen car made was to reduce the weight of the car and provide some additions in terms of aesthetic changes which are pitching the vehicle close to its original model. The model uses steel for its frame and also adapts some high-strength pieces which improve the rigidity and at the same time keep it as light as possible. The grille is also much smaller and it reminds us of the original Miata models. The headlights have a slanted design and also add LEDs and it also offers a new lighting configuration as well.

The back end has more of a unique kind of layout and they decided against a traditional one. A tall bumper and a protruding trunk lid are going to be added and we get a generally crisp kind of fascia with a rounded headlight design and sharp edges for the turn signals. The profile is also much sleeker and it is where the difference also lies. A sloping hood and musical fenders are how the car is characterized now and in a way has a GT-kind of an appearance.

Interior Design

The cabin of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata has been reshaped a little bit. In fact the new design of the car keeps the old toned down and minimalistic look but makes it useful and purposeful in every way. The dashboard is transferred as being completely the same but the previous plastic insert from the dash has been removed and substituted with a soft-touch one. They also managed to recorder the dash a bit and have cleaned it out significantly as they have moved most of the controls on the touchscreen and now offer lesser use of buttons and switches.

A trademark of every Miata is a three-spoke steering wheel which will make an appearance here as well and the center console is going to be similar as well. But the door panels are completely new as they have now adopted a more premium look for this version of the car. The seats are also modified a bit and the driver’s seats are lowered a bit and are supposed to provide a better seating position for the driver. You actually get a more of a race-like feel when you are behind the steering wheel in this car compared to the ones before.

Powertrain Updates

There were many claims about what powertrain the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata will incorporate, but in the end, we got a model that is familiar to the Mazda lineup. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder SkyActiv drivetrain has already been used in some previous Mazda models and has proven itself as a good option for these cars. Within the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata, it is going to be able to make an output of 155 horses and 148 pound-feet of twist, which is actually the same amount it makes in the Mazda3 model.

The Japanese version of 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is going to utilize the power of a  129 horsepower and 110 pound-feet of torque, but both versions use the same six-speed manual while the US-spec one adds a SKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speed automatic one as well.

0-60 mph and Top Speed

As far as the ability that the engines of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata provide, the car will introduce some very appropriate acceleration specs. It is still going to take it 6.5 seconds to reach 0-60 mph and retains the top speed of 130 mph that the current generation models have.

Fuel Economy Ratings for the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata takes full advantage of the weight reduction process that has been done and also utilizes the prospect of the powertrains at hand. This enables it to reach a fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city, 34 highway, 30 combined for the manual versions while the cars with the automatic shifter are rated at 27/36/30 mpg. This makes the MX-5 Miata a better car compared to the version that we had before.

Improved Safety

The use of a different platform for the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata also improves its safety specs. Its high-strength platform is able to protect the passengers better and is not only used to lower the weight of the car. But besides this, we also get the standard set of equipment that each model has. For instance, stout side-impact door beams, dual front airbags, and side airbags will be added here. Crash tests have yet to be made but we are certain that some improvements will be made in terms of the crash test scores.

Dimensions, Weight and Turn Space

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata has perfect and balanced dimensions when it comes to its overall size. The vehicle has already adopted a new kind of layout which ultimately made the car better in performance and enhanced its fuel efficiency. The overall length is now shortened to 154.1 inches, the width is 68.1 inches, the height 48.62 inches and the wheelbase amounts to 91.4 inches. The weight is an important factor here as the version with a manual shifter weighs 2,332 pounds while the automatic one comes to 2,381 pounds. Inside we have a passenger volume of 48 cu ft, while the trunk capacity is 4 cu ft.

Competing Vehicles

With the updated 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata car, we are looking at it fortifying its foothold on the market. The current model is already at the top of the segment and has managed to claim all of the given awards that fortify its position. But models that need to be mentioned include the Nissan 370Z Roadster and the Mini Roaster which are great cars by themselves and deserve equal claim and mentioning.
