2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R Release Date, Price and Specs

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R review

There are many rumors which are pointing to a possibility of a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R model appearing on the market. This is a part of VW’s release of a number of new crossover and SUV vehicles which started in 2016. They are planning to offer a number of cars in the days to come and the Tiguan model is one of them. Not only that, but it has been proposed that a range-topping R brand is supposed to come as well which will give the fans more things to languish about.

The original VW Tiguan model was a pioneer in its segment. Being one of the first premium compact crossover cars helped it to establish itself in the segment and to always hold a bar up for the upcoming rivaling models which never managed to reach the same level as the Tiguan. But since its introduction in 2007, the Volkswagen Tiguan model has been kept almost the same. The changes were often muted and there was not much going on when speaking about the reshaping of the car. However, the competition is catching up and we are in for a renaissance of vehicles which are coming from the German automaker. An updated Tiguan model is one of the wishes that we have made.

As for the R brand, there were a lot of rumors which said that an R rated coupe car was supposed to be made and released, separately from the Tiguan. But this would at the same time mean more development, planning, a completely new boy and more costs. So it was immediately very suspicious that this idea might be put into effect.

But the latest spy photos feature a camouflaged but beefed up Tiguan model which implies that an R badge is underneath it. It seems as if they are sticking to the standard crossover configuration this time and we have managed to get more information and are offering it in our review for the fans to learn before the respective release date?

Update: With the news of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R model being released some time ago, everyone was excited to see what VW was planning for its future. Everybody knows that they want to expand their lineup and that they are going to do so by outputting new SUV models. But there has not been much information about the R models that they have.

People started putting two and two together and we soon came to realize that the newest lineup of SUV vehicles will feature an R variant, namely the Tiguan R version. There were many assumptions on how this might come to be and we are still dealing with a lot of rumors when it comes to this car. But the bottom line is that it is going to happen. Volkswagen has done a great move by offering this kind of setup and we are extremely fortunate to have it now.

When is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R Release Date Coming?

Based on the recent photos of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R that we have received, we can assess that the model is not going to take too long to make. It looks nearly production-ready and we can expect the release date to be even available for 2021. Although Volkswagen has yet to release the details about this car and they are keeping it secret, there are many leaks already and we are sure that more are going to come in the wake of its official announcement.

Update: The previous review about the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R had a lot of assumptions about it and the majority of them were regarding the release date. Unfortunately, things do not get better as we are still not treated with an exact release date. The latest information is that the model will arrive by mid-2021. We are still hopeful in getting an earlier release which would bring us a model much sooner than expected. Keep your fingers crossed as Volkswagen sometimes does surprise its audiences with exceptional news regarding its new release.

Price List for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R

The price has yet to be settled for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R. It is perhaps too early to tell what the price of the car is going to be and we do not see it passing over the $50,000 mark like some of the most expensive rivaling models. But we do see it ranging around $45,000 even with the R badge.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R Exterior Appearance and Updates

It is very hard to tell how the future 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R model is going to look. The current test mule is wearing heavy camo which prevents us even from hinting how it might look like underneath. In a way, the design does offer some seemingly aggressive features, which first and foremost indicates an R badge model. However, the best way to determine the future appearance of the VW Tiguan R model is based on the Cross Coupe GTE that made its debut in 2015.

Although we do not expect all of the cues from this car to be transferred to the Tiguan car, there is a number of features that are probably going to be used. We do expect the model to inherit the beefy wheel arches, the vented engine hood and the more aggressive front bumper that comes with larger intakes. There is also a possibility of getting a sporty bumper that comes with integrated exhaust pipes. The rear end might benefit from a large spoiler that sits atop on the rear end of the car.

Perhaps this is wishful thinking in some sense and as it comes with all production vehicles a lot of it might be lost in the transition from the concept model to the production version. So there are a number of changes that might happen once the car gets to its final version.

Update: Our last assumptions about the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R car have mostly proven to be right and they are going to use the cues from the base Tiguan and upgrade it with the R badged features seen on those models. But other conformations have arisen and besides these, we will see some additional elements making its way into the final design. Mainly speaking, the Cross Coupe GTE concept is the fault for the latest exterior cues.

These are going to include the same sloping roofline and a prominent C-pillar which was previously seen in this car. It makes a lot of sense including this as it will combine with the aggressive nature of the Tiguan R model. We feel highly expected to see what the vehicle will hold as a whole.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R Interior Changes

It can be pretty hard to predict the interior design of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R. There are certain highlights which we are hoping to see and they might include an active instrument display, assortment of camera-aided safety features and also a head-up display. This is a crossover model, so we can surely count on the rear seats to be a part of the interior setup. But space and headroom might pose an issue if VW decides to make this a performance-orientated car even on the inside.

Update: The changes which we are going to see on the insider of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R will mostly mirror that of the base version. Tiguan has already introduced some great new features which are going to be seen on the inside.

The vehicle will inherit the clear look of its base form which is mostly seen for the dashboard of the car. This is going to be really good as the dash is highly organized as it has all the HVAC controls laid out quite neatly in front of you. Not to mention that the base model was updated with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, making the majority of things a lot easier. Also, VW is planning to introduce the slew if modern features which could only be compared to Audi’s Virtual Cockpit setup. They are in a way of copying the idea but not the design.

Drivetrain Options

If we think in a reasonable way, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R will probably transfer the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the Golf R version. This is probably the easiest and safest way to offer great performance from this model and give it the additional boost that the car might need. The potential output is thus 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough to enable it to compete against the current assortment of rivaling cars. The only problem may be seen in the six-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is at a disadvantage compared to the offer the rivals come with.

Update: Our initial assumption for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R was that they were going to use the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Golf R model. But they are going to tweak it up and give it more power and production. The vehicle will benefit from all those changes and it will most certainly produce 320 horsepower and at least 300 pound-feet of twist. When we say that this will enable the car to gain a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-60 mph performance of around 5 seconds, we got ourselves a pretty decent model on our hands.

Much will still be added for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R but there are many new things coming out each day about this car. Use our update above and our older review below and see what exactly the new 2021 Tiguan R is preparing for you.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R engine

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R 0-60 mph Acceleration and Top Speed

If the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R comes with this kind of setup under the hood, the model will probably enhance the acceleration rate when compared with the current one. The acceleration stands at a potential 5.5 seconds needed to reach 60 mph from a standstill and a limited top speed of 155 mph. This feat is mainly going to be possible due to the lightweight of the car.

Fuel Economy

The potential fuel economy for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R is still not available. The testing will be done officially once the engine is confirmed. We are hoping that the rates remain close to the ones that we already have at hand. Any sort of fuel efficiency improvements are possible due to the lighter construction of the car but the higher performance of the engine is not going to help that much in reducing the gas consumption of the car.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R Dimensions Changes

There is a possibility that the car enhances its dimensions and that we get a bigger 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R. This might greatly benefit the interior which is at a loss already but we do not know in what way they are planning to modify the car. There have been some announcements that we are looking at a 3.5-inch enhancement in wheelbase of the car and 5 inches added to the overall size. These numbers might give enough space for the inside and make it much more comfortable. If that happens we are looking at a potential overall length of 182 inches and a wheelbase of 109.1 inches.

Safety Specifications

The confirmation about the safety system for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R will probably come once the interior setup is established. The inside of the car will include all the latest safety equipment and it will probably transfer the current setup that we already possess in the version that we have now. But as things go, we also expect a slew of improvements to come as well which will update and offer us an expanded range of features that will probably make things a lot smoother and better.

Rivaling Models

The list of vehicles that are potential rivals to the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R is not that long. However, there is a number of vehicles that are already successfully competing in the premium crossover segment and can pose a great threat to the upcoming VW Tiguan R version. These are of course the Mercedes GLA45 AMG model and the Audi RS Q3 car which already have loads of potential. We will have to see what offer the latest Tiguan R will come in order to rival the given models.
