Models

There are going to be a few 2022 BMW x5 trim models to choose from. The models to look for are the sDrive40i/xDrive40i one, the xDrive45e, the M50i, and the M.

BMW x5 sDrive40i/xDrive40i

The price for this one starts at $59,400. This is the only x5 variant with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) but has the option of being upgraded to an all-wheel-drive variant. But whichever way you go, the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6-cylinder is the one that will be under the hood.

It generates power of 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque and 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg in combined driving (RWD). It comes equipped with LED lighting, 16-way power-adjustable heated front sport seats and split-folding rear seats, and a Driving Assistance Professional Package for an added $1,700.

BMW x5 xDrive45e

This trim packs a turbocharged inline-6-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The battery alone allows it to travel up to 23 miles per hour. The hybrid mileage is rated at 50 MPGe, while the turbocharged engine makes it to 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.

What distinguishes this trim from the others is the addition of a self-leveling 2-axle air suspension, only available on the xDrive45e. Besides the upgraded suspension, it features added eDrive services and a Live Cockpit pro with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. This one comes at a starting price of $60,515.

BMW x5 M50i

The M50i version of the BMW x5 comes at a price of $82,800. It packs a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine under the hood with a lot more power (532 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque), hence the price tag. The mileage is estimated at 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. But the biggest perk comes with the towing capacity of 7,200 pounds.

This trim includes all the standard equipment but expands on it by adding M Sport brakes, an M Sport Differential, and adaptive M Sport Suspension. Not to mention that the entire M Sport Package comes standard. Other inclusions are luxury interior content (20-way power-heated front seats and 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio) and Wi-Fi connectivity.

BMW x5 M

The M trim is, of course, the most expensive trim – coming at you at $105,900. To put it in simple words – it is track-ready. A 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine performing at 600 hp, with an added 17 hp if you increase to the Competition Package. The torque will remain the same, but the fuel economy numbers are not looking pretty, given at 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 15 mpg. But it is an expected price to pay for more power.

Besides the extra speed, the M trim offers a complete list of M performance perks various drive-aid and connectivity tech suitable for this version.

2022 BMW x5 Interior

What we noticed with the interior of the 2022 BMW x5 is that the first two rows are more than spacious enough for adults. However, the optional third row is only suitable for children. The materials are high-quality, there are plenty of ports for various devices, and, depending on the trim, it adds plenty of modern features.

Power-adjustable seats and steering column, with heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a sleek customizable ambient light is everything that graces the interior of the car.

Most of the work has been on the inside, so other luxury additions include a leather dashboard, remote start, massaging seats, acoustic glass, heated front armrests, and soft-close doors, among others. The best part is the new steering wheel that makes the 2022 BMW x5 truly feel like a high-end luxury SUV.

2022 BMW x5 Exterior

There hasn’t been much work done on the outside of the 2022 BMW x5. An untrained eye may not be able to spot the major differences. But experts can clearly see that the headlights are completely new. The front fascia resembles the M-Competition model with some aggressive features. Some vents have been also added to cool the brakes a bit more.

The backside of the car features an M-Competition bumper, a new, more than pronounced diffuser, all combined with some novel exhaust tips. We were hoping to get a new grille, lights, and bumper, but it seems that those changes have to wait for a completely different update.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

We already mentioned the 2022 BMW x5 engine choices in the trim section. Each trim has its own engine that it comes with. The sDrive40i or xDrive40i models will come with a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six engine. As far as the plug-in hybrid model goes, it will include a turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor that combined produce 389 horsepower.

We were impressed by the fact that the 40i allows the car to hit the 60mph mark in 4.8 seconds. On the other hand, the M50i’s 523-hp twin-turbo V-8 allows it to race to 60 in 4 seconds flat.

No matter which engine you decide to go with, an eight-speed automatic transmission is going to accompany it. It enables a stable drive and better handling, which is an improvement with all the previous x5 models. Finally, the maximum towing capacity not dependant on the engine is 7,200 pounds.

Fuel Economy and MPG

The fuel economy of the inline-six engine is just a bit better compared to the 2022 BMW x5 four-cylinder powertrain. But using the V-8, the EPA rates collapse right down. The 40i model was the only one that was able to outperform its highway rating (at 28 mpg). The 50i had 20 mpg, only 2 mpg less than it was expected to produce.

Running the hybrid model only on battery power resulted in 46 MPGe and 26 mpg overall.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

As far as the safety features go for the 2022 BMW x5 model, it comes with some of the standard ones that each of the current BMW models has. These would be automated emergency breaks and pedestrian detection. An advanced safety inclusion is the semi-autonomous driving mode, which is optional.

Other standard features that come are lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Cargo

The cargo bay of the 2022 BMW x5 has 33 ft3 of space. You are not going to fit a whole lot inside it, but it is suitable for a short trip if you plan to use it for such situations.

2022 BMW x5 Dimensions and Weight

The curb weight of the 2022 BMW x5 counts 5,627 lb, which does not differ so much compared to the previous model. The dimensions are also kept the same as the wheelbase counts 117.1 inches. The length of the car is 194.3 inches, the width is 78.9 inches, and the height is 68.7 inches. The passenger volume is not changed as well and counts 103 ft3, which is quite adequate for comfortably seating the first two rows of passengers.

Top Competitors

The 2022 BMW x5 certainly has a lot more to offer compared to its competition. That is not to say that they are not coming in full force to outsell their models. The three top competitors are the Cadillac XT5, Land Rover Defender, and Cadillac XT6.

2022 BMW x5 Versus the Competition

When comparing the 2022 BMW x5 versus its competitors, the base model is much pricier than all three main competitors. The Cadillac XT6 is the priciest one and it comes at a base price of $48,595. As far as fuel economy goes, the city drive numbers are the same, but the x5 puts on better numbers on the highway. Also, at a power of 335hp, it is much more powerful compared to the Defender, for instance, which packs 296 hp under the hood.
